Industrial Gears: An Insight

Industrial gears are machines that cause torque/motion in mechanical systems attached to them. These are generally tooth-shaped rotating machines that form a couple with one or more tooth-shaped parts of a mechanical system. Such an arrangement that provides motion to the whole system is termed as a "Gear". The main objectives are to convert mechanical energy into some form of motion and to change the speed and direction of that motion.

When many gears work simultaneously in sync, it is termed as transmission. A transmission generally contains gears which are different in size. If two different gears of different sizes are in transmission, then the smaller gear will move more swiftly than the bigger one. Although, the torque generated by the bigger one is more than that of the smaller ones. Transmission is very much similar to a cross belted pulley motion with two wheels. Though in the case of gears we have an advantage - gears do not slip due to their tooth-shaped structure. Gears are an obligatory fixture in all of the automobiles and machines that need the motion to perform some action.

Types:

There are many types of industrial gears, namely: Spur Gear, Helical Gear, Bevel Gear, and Worm Gear. These different types of gears serve different purposes across almost all industries.

Typical Characteristics:

Gears must ensure certain qualities and perform well under peak work hours. Let us look at the most coveted qualities in industrial gears.

  1. High tensile strength to bear heavy load - The material used for manufacturing purposes should withstand high pressures.

  2. High endurance for peak load hours - During the peak hours when the load is surmounting for a particular period of time, the industrial gear should exhibit great endurance qualities to cope up with the harshest conditions.

  3. Robust - Robustness is a major plus for any mechanical device. It becomes an indispensable trait in the case of industrial gears as they are prone to much wear and tear.

  4. Great grip or high coefficient of friction - Tooth shaped structure ensures a high coefficient of friction.
